We’re still sharing the message that Arbor Circle invited us to be a part of for their video needs. As the interviews unfolded, it was readily apparent that the content was so wonderful and so engaging to learn about adoption and what most know, and what most don’t know about it that we asked if we could share the conversations too. With their gracious permission, we are doing just that.
Hannah Konnie is a long time member of the team and works in Ottawa County. She began as a case worker and navigated her way up to being a Volunteer Coordinator in the organization working with the Court Appointed Special Care (CASA) volunteers. A CASA volunteer speaks on behalf of an abused or neglected child in Michigan. It’s a big responsibility and it’s a major commitment to the betterment of children who might not be in the best situations.
One of the things we discuss most is the most common misunderstandings of adoptions and fostering. Some are under the impression that the kids come from the wrong side of the tracks. It’s not always the case. The kids often come in scared, who wouldn’t be but there’s a lot more to this than just that element. Knowing that the ultimate goal is always reunification of the biological family, it’s helpful but to not just put things in the back of our minds and be open to get past what’s heard and seen in movies and TV. Kids are resilient and with the support of good and loving parents, they can take steps forward.
Some concerns Hannah shares? The need for families of color to help with fostering and adoption. Imagine if you had the need for a hand from Arbor Circle? Now, when you get it, you are off to a secure and stable place to be however everything has changed. The cultural differences. The food. The TV shows. The music. All of it. On top of that, a family crisis? It’s an awful lot to process and while Arbor Circle is there every step of the way, familiarity is always welcome.
We wrap things up a little with the idea of how to get into this line of work. Are you passionate about kids? There’s a way into this and Hannah helps explain it all.
